Fashion Jewellery and Fine Jewellery

Protect your House of Nicholetta jewellery, and avoid them tarnishing or discolouring earlier rather than later and avoid breakages by:

  • removing them when swimming, showering and exercising,
  • avoiding using cleaning products and other chemicals whilst you are wearing them,
  • storing away from direct sunlight and humid conditions,
  • Avoiding spraying or getting perfumes or body lotions on them.
  • Avoid dropping your items especially on hard surfaces as beads or stones may become detached. Where possible wear butterfly clasps to prevent loss  and breakages. We are generally not able to provide you with extra stones or beads.
  • All items come individually in velvet pouches in order to protect them, avoid scratches or rubbing, and to maintain their appearance.

The above applies to both costume/fashion jewellery and fine jewellery. Please note that over time all costume jewellery may tarnish or change colour.

Below are some extra care instructions for fine jewellery!

Sterling Silver Jewellery

  • For sterling silver jewellery, a Jewellery Cloth is always included with your purchase to help maintain your jewels.

Please note that Sterling Silver will naturally tarnish over time. Certain suppliers may plate their jewellery with special layer of Rhodium to delay the tarnish process. A lot of handmade artisans avoid using rhodium plating as it can give their creations a shiny and slightly plasticised, look which they don't admire on their hand made creations.

  • To slow down tarnishing, clean your silver jewellery after wearing it. Oils from your skin accumulate on the surface of silver and can predispose it to oxidization.  Use a tarnish removing polishing cream or a silver polishing cloth.
  • All items come individually in velvet pouches in order to protect them, avoid scratches or rubbing, and to maintain their appearance.
Gold Plated Jewellery

Gently rubbing the surface of your gold plated jewellery using a soft jewellery cloth (like microfibre cloth) helps restore shine.  If your jewellery needs more cleaning you may clean it with warm, soapy water.

Do not use a POLISHING CLOTH on plated products as this will strip away the plating.  Most jewellers will generally only plate with one micron of gold almost like a mm of gold plating.

Showering with gold plated jewellery can eventually (even within months) cause the gold layer to wear off completely and tarnish therefore refrain from doing so.

With good and proper care, the gold plated layer can last up to a year or even two but this is not guaranteed by HON.

Brass Jewellery

Brass is a copper and zinc alloy, which results in the gold colour for example our Rosa Mendez jewellery from Spain.  Brass can tarnish over time as a reaction to air and moisture but can easily be cleaned or you can call it antique brass when it tarnishes.  Some jewellers love working with brass because of these age changing qualities.

To clean tarnished brass beauties there are lots of different methods to choose from!

  • Rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly.
  • For tougher stains, dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1/2 cup of vinegar and add enough flour to make a paste.  Rub onto the brass and leave for 10 minutes, then rinse and buff dry.
  • There's is of course ready made brass polishing products that you can purchase and clean your brass jewellery.

HEADPIECE TLC

  • Avoid any direct Hairspraying after your Headpiece/Crown has been styled in your hair.  This may discolour or dampen the look of your jewels and metallic hardware. Some experienced hairdressers still make this mistake.
  • Your headpiece shall be stored in a House of Nicholetta cardboard box to protect it from dust and other weather conditions.
